Sweets Cat

A sad, sad post

Today my dog Tonya, who has been part of my family since I was seven years old, passed away. She was very old, almost 14, but I am still very heartbroken. My dad called me to tell me that she was sick about 5:30 this evening, and I later found out from my mom that she had had a stroke on Friday, and that her blood count was all wrong. They did some tests and while at first the tests showed nothing, further examination at a better animal hospital in Madison, they found cancer in her liver and stomach. She was bleeding internally and she probably wouldn't have lived through the week, maybe even the night. Luckily, the doctors were able to find the cancer at a stage that it wasn't yet causing her physical pain, so even though she was really weak and feeble, she was still able to be her smiley, attentive self until the end. My family chose a procedure for her that allowed her to lay on her bed with my family around her as she passed. I wish I could have been there, I'm so upset that I couldn't hug her one last time...

I'm so glad that the last time I saw her she was happy and active. She seemed weak, but she was glad to see me, and she was very much herself. I'm glad that she didn't have to suffer, and that she was able to spend her last minutes with her family. All of us loved her so much, she wasn't just a pet to us, she was really part of our family. She slept in one of our beds every night, and rode with us in the front seat of the car, and came into our rooms to comfort us when we were sad, and would poke her head into our rooms just to check on us. She chased deer in the woods, ran in her dreams, stole hot dogs from the table, looked after kelly, and even cuddled with my cats. I love her and I will never forget how wonderful she was, and how she was really was my guardian and my friend. She had a full and happy life and I am so glad I was able to be her person.
